Diary

Our club meets for a social run every Tuesday, and for a training run every Thursday. We also participate in cross-country and road races most weekends, and ad-hoc groups often get together during the week for various other runs together, such as long runs.

All of our activities are attended by members of all abilities.

In general:
Winter runs are on the road within Burton, starting from the Shobnall Leisure Complex reception.
Summer runs are off-road from various locations in the Burton area, usually starting and finishing at a pub.

High vis vests must be worn for all winter evening runs, and head torches where street lighting is poor. If any member requires a high vis vest, one can be ordered from our Club Kit page.

The training run will start from the MEADOWSIDE Leisure Centre at 7:15pm. This time we’ll do a longer hill than in previous sessions. We’ll warm up running to Beaufort Rd via Clay St. which is about 1.4 miles. Then 2 sets of 15 minute runs up and down the hill between Quorn Close and Grafton Rd. One uphill run will be about .22 miles. The hill run will be entirely on the well-lit footpath and won’t cross any side roads. But high vis jackets will still be needed.

Considering that the Burton 10mile race is on Sunday I’ve decided to do intervals again and anyone wishing to just have a 4 mile jog (or shorter) can join us on the farm track at the rear of the Albion Pub on Shobnall Road (DE14 2BE). We will meet at Shobnall Reception before leaving at 7:15pm to run to the Albion.

We’ll do a warm up jog on the farm track before beginning the workout of alternating quarter mile run at pace, quarter mile recovery, over 2 miles. Two sets.
    Or just jog the course.

There's a few races upcoming with long hills so for a bit of practice this is a 0.6 mile (1km) off-road hill from Elms Road to the water tower on Tower Road followed by a 0.3mile (500m) slight downhill to the far end of Tower Road. Then back to the water tower and down the hill to complete one 1.8 mile (3km) rep. and take a short rest. We'll do 2 reps and if we get a bit strung out the faster guys can do a bonus third rep. Park on Elms Road.

Meet at Shobnall reception for a 7:15pm departure. We’ll warm-up with a jog past the running track to the canal bridge to the east of Shobnall, and then along the cycle track to Dallow St. bridge and back to the Shobnall bridge. The intervals at pace will be done on this cycle path (0.22 miles, 353m) followed by a recovery jog back along the canal tow path to the start. So the loop is around 0.45 miles. We’ll do these reps for 15 minutes, take a rest then do a second set.

We had a track session on Tuesday so I’ve decided not to do another workout on Thursday. Instead we’ll do a 6 mile run from Shobnall Reception which can be used for recovery, Fartlek sprints for those who want to, or just come for a run. The route is another of my mystery footpaths runs. So it’s all on tarmac and on as many footpaths or cycle tracks as I can find.

Meet at Shobnall Reception for a 7:15pm departure. We will do a 1.4 mile warm up run to Forest Edge Way. If you can’t make it to Shobnall for 7:15 go directly to Forest Edge Way; we’ll probably get there at 7:30 but it won’t matter if you’re a little late.
Forest Edge Way is a loop of 0.35 miles having an elevation gain of 22 feet for the first half of the lap, so the intervals will have a slight uphill and downhill. The course is in a residential area, crosses no roads, has good street lighting and has little traffic.
The plan is to do 2 sets of 5 x 2 minute efforts with 1 minute recovery between each; 5 minute break between sets.

So we’ll do 3 sets of 10 minute runs up and recovery jog down the hill with a short rest between each set. There will be a choice of distance up the same hill: 0.11 miles (180m) with approx. 60ft of climb, ave. gradient 10%; 0.26miles with approx. 120ft of climb, ave. gradient 8.5%. We will start from the MEADOWSIDE Leisure Centre at 7:15pm (bring £1 for parking). We’ll warm up running to Violet Way via Malvern Ave. which is about 1.5 miles. Reservoir Road. Meet at Shobnall Leisure Complex at 19:15 and jog 2.6 km the long way around to Reservoir Road to warm up, via the A38 footbridge, Belvoir Road, Belvedere Road and Lower Outwoods Road. There is a short section of unlit footpath into the new estate between Lower Outwoods Road and Reservoir Road. I'll bring a head torch but it's not necessary for everyone to do so as we can huddle or just walk that bit. We should be at the bottom of Reservoir Road shortly after 19:30 if anyone would prefer to meet us there. Cool down jog about 1km, the short way back to Shobnall. See the email for details of the session. Note: Shobnall car park may be closed this evening.
