High Peaks Relay Races Sunday November 13th, 2011
Wonderful foggy conditions greeted the runners who competed in the Annual High Peak Relay Races starting from Cromford in Derbyshire. The course went out onto the High Peaks Trail for 14.06 miles then back again providing a challenging 8-Stage Relay. With 38 teams competing this year, Hatton Darts were represented by 4 Teams comprising Mens 1, Mens 2, Mixed Team and Ladies. After excellent performances we are pleased to report that the Mens 1 Team came third overall position, each winning a coveted "Hilly" Headband in time of 169 minutes. This is in no small part to the brave efforts of young Ashley Hurdman who somehow managed to complete the longest stage on one leg, having injured his foot after only 2 miles of running. Staggering over the line he passed onto even younger Alex Benfield who showed a clean pair of heels to his older competitors winning his stage in good time. The remaining team members comprised Tony Caulton, Matt Wagstaffe, Duncan Stewart, Stan Knopik, Cory Parker and Jim Londesborough. Mens 2 Team came 8th in 185 minutes were Paul Mellor, Stan Knopik, Dave Gilman, Andy Crockford, Ian Stewart, Matt Wagstaffe, Chris Matthews and Tim Matthews. Mixed Team came 24th in 217 minutes were Tony Press, Karen Jackson, Pete Dawson, Laura Jackson, Andy Crockford, Tony Caulton, Chris Grice and Colin Scattergood. Ladies Team came in 34th position overall in 236 minutes comprising Emma Hallas, Sylvia Franklin, Naomi Warr, Ruth Matthews, Sam Owen, Karen Jackson, Sian Hamilton and Sarah Longford. At the finish, the Darts then enjoyed the delicious customary cake kindly cooked and provided by Sarah.
Special mention must go to Stan "the Clipboard Man" Knopik who did an excellent job in organising the teams and travelling arrangements despite late cancellations from several Hatton runners leaving him having to rearrange team orders and asking 4 Darters to run two Stages. A thankless task and one that was appreciated from all who competed on the day.
