Race Report

A group of 8 runners from Hatton darts took part in the annual Man v Horse race around Llanwrtydd Wells in mid-Wales. The gruelling race pitted 49 horses and riders against 600 athletes over a 22 mile course of boggy ground, forestry tracks, river crossings and lung-bursting hill-climbs.

Yet again four hooves triumphed against two feet, with Duke's Touch of Fun ridden by Geoff Allen winning the race in 2 hours and 9 minutes and a prize of one thousand guineas. First runner over the line was Mark Cox of Salford Harriers some 8 minutes behind.

The Darts were more than happy to be in the silverware, finishing as runner-up in the team event with Tony Caulton (2:39), Gordy Smith(2:56) and Tony Press (3:27) all putting in superb performances. Caulton, who finished 7th runner overall, also received a trophy in the vet 40 category.

Claire McDonnell and Kathy Caulton also completed the tough course, with McDonnell, who finished in 3:54, saying it was the hardest race she had competed in. Kathy Caulton clocked 4:25, which although down on her previous time was still good considering the hot, humid weather.
Chris Fletcher,Paul Brown and Cath Hallam competed in the 3-stage relay event, finishing the 22 miles in a combined time of 3:11 - another creditable performance.
